    Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) was founded in 1958 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. It is a modernised and comprehensive (first-rate of Level three) hospital with integration of medical services, medical education/teaching, research and prevention as well as health care, and it has become one of the designated hospitals for the Olympic Games in 2008. At present, the Hospital has a staff of 2,282 and 1200 clinic beds, 34 clinical departments, 10 medical technique departments, 27 master¡¯s programmes, 23 doctoral programmes,1 clinical postdoctoral programme, near 50 doctoral supervisors, 1 Chinese Academy of Science member and 1 Chang Jiang Scholar, 1 Outstanding Youth of National Natural Science Funds Winner.
    Based on several generations¡¯ efforts, Peking University Third Hospital has developed to a high-level and large-scale health care providor. The hospital has Reproductive Medicine Centre, which is the first founded in China mainland but also remains one of the largest Reproductive Medicine Centre in Asia; Spinal Surgery department which has the strongest influence in China and athletes' diseases prevention and cure centre which is the only state-level sector certified by the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC); the Cardiology department ranks first nationwide; the Institute of Vascular Medicine is the key lab for molecular cardiovascular medicine studies established by Ministry of Education; the Eye Centre plays the leading role on diagnosis and treatment of Ocular Trauma and other difficult and complicated ophthalmology cases; the Gastronenterology department stands in the upper echelons regarding pathogenesis and treatment of ulcer, and diagnosis and treatment early gastric cancer, the Plastic Surgery department and the Occupational Diseases department were earliest-founded in China and have their clinical characteristics subjects. In the past 10 years, Peking University Third Hospital has been improving the level of operation and the quality of its medical services. The hospital deals with more than 8,000 daily and emergency outpatient visits, keeping its position in the front row among hospitals in Beijing The average hospitalisation days is manageable 9 days, and other main management indexes has approached to advanced level, receiving recognitions and honours from the Ministry of Health and Beijing Municipal Health Bureau.
    Moreover, as a teaching hospital of Peking University, the Hospital undertakes considerable amount of pedagogical tasks including Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Laboratory Medicine and Preventive Medicine. The hospital also undertakes training responsibilities achieving remarkable success for the post-graduates, medical observers. Furthermore, there are 14 departments and 10 departments are respectively confirmed by Beijing Municipal Health Bureau as general medical specialist training base and sub-specialist training base, and responsible for the training mission of specialists in Beijing. In 2005, the hospital was awarded second prize of China State-Level Teaching Award. In 2006, Professor QU Mianyu was awarded the first CAI YuanPei Award of Peking University. In 2007, our hospital passed the evaluation for undergraduate education with overall ¡°A¡± score issued by the Ministry of Education.
    With several years efforts, Peking University Third Hospital has made significant progress in science and research. The hospital was awarded 6 National Science and Technology Awards, 108 Provincial Awards. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the hospital ranked national top 20 health care sectors in SCI publications. In 2007,the Orthopaedics department was awarded the ¡®Innovation Team¡¯ issued by the Ministry of Education.
